New to Care
Following our success as delivery partners working in partnership with Nottingham City Council on the Pathways to Health and Social Care Project, which ended December 2023, we are supporting candidates to find suitable roles or training to enable them to join our health and social care workforce with our New to Care programme.
We aim to attract people who are either unemployed or working in other sectors to consider working in health and social care, in a variety of different roles including non-patient facing roles. Our dedicated advisors will assist in highlighting the career pathways available and help to identify existing transferable skills, signposting to local vacancies, and assisting with the application and interview process. We want to encourage anyone who is thinking of working in the sector by promoting how accessible and rewarding the work is and the multitude of roles available.
In our role as an anchor development team, we are exploring innovative opportunities to support local people aimed at contributing to building a healthier community. We engage in a range of initiatives, including apprenticeships, pre-employment programmes, virtual work experience offers and multi-media campaigns.
Included in our aims is to support all providers across Joined Up Care Derbyshire to meet the requirements and priorities of the NHS Workforce Plan, leading on a range of workforce transformation initiatives.

Support for job application and interview skills
The Careers team has scheduled a programme of new, virtual sessions to help guide potential candidates in completing applications and interview skills.
The sessions are free and open to anyone who would like some additional tips and support in their journey into a role in health and social care.
The new series of sessions runs throughout 2025.

Step Into Work
Step Into Work (Derbyshire) programmes run throughout the year helping prepare unemployed adults to obtain roles in health and social care following completion of a bespoke training course.
Sector Based Work Academies
Sector-based work academies are a way to provide direct employment into the care sector. The scheme can help those who are ready to work, and receiving benefits, to secure employment. They are designed to help care employers meet immediate and future recruitment needs as well as recruiting a workforce with the right skills. Please return to this website later this year for details of when our next academy will be running. A sector-based work academy can last up to six weeks and include the following:
- Pre-employment training, including CV writing, interview techniques and the workplace environment
- Sector-based skills – depending on the available job roles, this will be training based around the organisation
Progression to Nursing programme
A new ‘Progression to Nursing’ pre-employment programme focused on nursing careers is being established. It is being run by the University of Derby and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, in association with The Hub Plus Derbyshire. The programme will show participants what it is like to be a nurse and how Derbyshire’s health and care services work to give patients the best possible care. People will receive two weeks’ training, a chance to practice skills, and careers advice and guidance.
Step Into Health
Joined Up Care Derbyshire is a supporter of the Step into Health programme which works to actively promote the NHS as an ideal employer to members of the Armed Forces community. The Step into Health programme connects candidates from across the Armed Forces community with employers and new opportunities in the NHS.
Step into Health provides support and guidance for NHS organisations to review and enhance recruitment practices, so they are able to attract members of the Armed Forces community, benefit from the transferable skills and values they bring to the workforce and showcase the NHS as the employer of choice.

NHS Cadets
NHS Cadets, run by St John Ambulance, aims to attract young people to careers in healthcare and to develop their skills to the point where they are self-sufficient in health volunteer opportunities. NHS Cadets assists young people in not only acquiring new skills and knowledge but also gaining hands-on experience in the NHS through a 36-week programme (two hours per week, not including work experience). The programme aims to specifically increase access to careers in the NHS for 14-18-year-olds from groups that have historically been under-represented in volunteer opportunities in the health care system.
Local colleges
A range of specialist courses are run by further education and higher education institutions in Derby and Derbyshire that help prepare students for careers in health and social care.
Supporting care leavers into the workplace
The health and care system in Derby and Derbyshire is one of the first in the country to have all local organisations signed up to a scheme to support young people leaving care to access a career path in the sector.
Partner organisations in the Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care System (ICS) have all signed up to the programme, known as the Care Leaver Covenant, which helps care leavers aged 16-25 to access employment, education and training opportunities and support their independence.
