New to Care?

• Care assistant (care homes)

Care assistant (care homes): Take care of residents’ physical and emotional wellbeing. Assist with meal times, personal care, leisure activities and much more. Full and part time opportunities, in various care homes.

Care workers: Look after people in a care home/centre or in their own homes (transport required to travel to people’s homes). Employed by Derby City Council or Derbyshire County Council, various hours available. A rewarding role where you can make a difference – helping someone feel cared for, safe and happy!

Community response support workers: Support people on a short-term basis in their own home following discharge from hospital. Employed by the NHS, full or part time roles available. NVQ/BTEC in health and social care and access to transport required.

Domiciliary care/support workers: Support people in their own home with personal care, medication, meals, brightening their day! Full and part time roles available, employed by various different private/independent employers. Training is provided, you just need to have the passion and desire to care. Access to transport is required.

Entry routes

• No previous experience – don’t worry! Support and training provided – just bring your energy and personality!
• Derbyshire Reservist – ‘freelance’ roles in health and social care, some roles such as our Essential Assistant do not require any previous experience.
• Volunteers – you may be working as a volunteer already or looking for volunteer opportunities.
• Caring for family or an individual with special needs – you are already demonstrating your caring nature – a career in care could be just the answer.
• Pre-employment programmes – there are several support programmes for those currently out of work seeking a job in health or social care.

If you are new to care, you will be given the induction and training you need, no matter which employer you apply to. This will usually include the Care Certificate, a set of skills that everyone new to care must learn to help them provide the best care.

If you want to progress and learn new skills and qualifications, there are loads of options available.  You might even be able to do further training via an apprenticeship funded by your employer.

• Registered manager
